FIFA WORLD CUP 2022
We all love to play outdoor games, don’t we?
Especially football or soccer. I love it a lot! I like not only to play football but also to watch it. And the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) hosts the most magnificent football world cup, which is held every four years.
The last world cup was held in 2022. And it was hosted by Qatar, the first middle eastern country to host the world cup ever. And the duration of it was from 22 November to 18 December. 32 teams played 64 matches in eight venues across 5 cities.
The arrangements Qatar did from the beginning to the end of the tournament cannot be overlooked. The grand opening ceremony they organised was beyond everyone’s expectations and was so much better than the previous world cup opening ceremonies. Morgan Freeman and Ghanim Al- Muftah did an excellent job in their staging. Also, the performance by the South Korean artist and BTS member Jungkook and the Qatari artist Fahad Al Qubaisi was fantastic.
We cannot ignore the fact that, for the first time in history, the Holy Quran was recited in the opening ceremony. The first game was held between Qatar and Ecuador and Ecuador won by 2:0. The matches were going well until the match between Croatia and Brazil was held and the whole tournament took a twist. Everyone expected Brazil to win but it didn’t happen. Brazil lost against Croatia in the penalty shootout and it made the entire competition more interesting.
However, in the finals, which was on 18 December, France and Argentina played against each other. It was a draw after an electric 3-3. But Argentina won 4-2 in the shootout.
Argentina became one of the most successful teams after winning the world cup for the third time, followed by 1978 and 1986.
For winning the championship, Argentina received a good sum of 42 million u.s dollars.
Lionel Messi, the captain of Argentina, won the Golden Ball. Argentina’s goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez won the Golden Glove.
And Kylian Mbappe, the France player, was announced as the top scorer of the finals because of his splendid hat trick and was awarded the Golden boot for it.
From the beginning to the end of the 2022 World Cup tournament, all the matches, the commentary, and everything was so exciting. It will always be memorable for us and we shall never forget it.
